Pleated window shades are often made of translucent vinyl and create a clean, tailored look. In modern, minimalist homes these window shades are used alone on expansive windows where they adjust up or down depending on the view. With a weekly dusting, pleated window shades can be easier to keep clean than some other styles of shades and blinds.

Roller blinds are traditional and widely available. They can be made in room darkening material as well as semi-opaque depending on your needs. They are less expensive than some other window shades options and usually look best underneath other curtains. While roller window shades may not be a high fashion choice, they are convenient and improve your options regarding sunlight. Pulled down, they protect the furnishings inside from the ravages of UV light. In an old-fashioned style home, roller window shades are appropriate and will probably be appreciated by all.
