when desired, but can open the house to the outside at other times, you can't beat horizontal blinds. Horizontal blinds come in a range of classic styles. Roll-up
bamboo shades or
faux wood mini blinds,
for instance, impart a warm homey feeling to relaxed country decor. Sheer vinyl
cellular shades
or neutrally colored
venetian blinds
are horizontal blinds that fit a more streamlined modern room or home. Horizontal blinds are often used under curtains or with other decorating accents around windows. A relatively new option in horizontal blinds is to have them lower from the top as well as raise from the bottom.
If the horizontal blinds you want to use have a dangling cord, there are things you can do to make them safer around your small children. Hanging cords are interesting to small children and they are tempted to explore them. Be sure you never place a chair near the window because children can climb up to get the cord. The cords should also be placed on hooks. Wrapping and twisting the cords of your horizontal blinds around the hook is not necessary or advised. An even better answer, though, is to purchase horizontal blinds that feature cordless construction or break-away safety tassels.
When choosing horizontal blinds, one of the first decisions you need to make is whether you want more light, or more privacy. Bamboo horizontal blinds, for example can be bought with or without a privacy lining. The privacy lining will make the room darker, but you will have more privacy. Privacy linings are available on other types of horizontal blinds, too, such as
Roman shades.
These traditional blinds raise in overlapping folds. Of course they come is a wide array of fashion colors and fabric textures. Without the privacy lining, though, they filter the sun for a light and airy feel. Whatever your needs, there is sure to be a style of horizontal blinds that will be exactly what you're looking for.
