Honeycomb Shades
a.k.a. Cellular Shades
Honeycomb shades, also known as
cellular shades,
were developed in response to the energy crisis of the seventies. They are made from honeycomb shaped cells that trap air,
insulating the windows.
Double cell and even triple cell shades are available for added insulation, and cells can be ordered in different sizes. When opened, honeycomb shades can fold up into a thin stack at the top of the window. There are several different options for opening honeycomb shades, including top down / bottom up, pull-cord, electrical and remote control.
Honeycomb shades are an effective method of keeping heat in the home during winter. Normally, heat is drawn to the cold windows in a room and escapes. A honeycomb shade's cells act as insulation, keeping cold air from entering the room, so the warm air is not drawn toward the window. Honeycomb shades also keep the hot air out of the home in summer.
Honeycomb shades come in different styles to suit the customer's desires. For those who want shades that let in a soft glow of light, translucent shades are a good buy. Regular shades make a room darker and provide more privacy, while blackout shades keep light out.
While honeycomb shades are popular with ordinary, rectangular windows, they work well with a variety of window types and shapes. Honeycomb shades that open into a half circle are a favorite for arches. Translucent shades that let some light into a room work well with skylights. The shades can be ordered with supportive side rails when they're being used for skylights. Because they keep out the heat and cold, vertical honeycomb shades are a good choice for sliding doors.
