Enhance Your Privacy
... with the Right Blinds
|
Modern people crave privacy and with good reason. Our phones summon us constantly while our crowded cities keep us stressed out. One of the best ways to create a private place within your own home is through the use of
window blinds.
Recent developments in the design of blinds have brought us some unique and practical options. You can now dress your windows with sheer blinds that provide daytime translucence with nighttime privacy.

High windows are difficult to reach for adjusting blinds, but today's window shades can be installed with remote control or a wall switch for operation. There are even blinds options for skylights and unusually shaped windows. The best blinds for privacy are those that can be closed completely. Look for styles that do not have cords running through the vanes. These (for example,
venetian blinds)
sometimes have peepholes where the cords run through. Another option for privacy is to choose blinds with a track that runs down the sides of the window. These eliminate any peepholes where the sides of the blinds meet the window frame.
In general, darker colors and less translucent materials are better choices when privacy is desired. Some of the styles that are usually seen in sheer fabrics, such as
cellular shades and
Roman shades
can be purchased in black-out versions that darken the room and eliminate all light from getting through. If black-out fabrics are unavailable, there are liners for shades that can be used to enhance privacy.
Free hanging
vertical blinds,
while attractive, may not be a good choice for privacy. The loose vanes can get caught on furniture or whatever and create a small window for passers by. Similarly,
bamboo blinds
tend to have tiny irregular openings between the slats. While these create a great-looking casual window treatment, if you need strict privacy, there are better choices.
