Window Treatments
All Types of Blinds
Blinds are popular and attractive options for
window treatments.
They complement most interiors and are effective for blocking out light, which can fade and damage furniture and pictures in the home. Gone are the days when homeowners were limited to wooden
venetian blinds.
Today's buyers have a medley of styles and materials to choose from when searching for blinds.
Blinds can be found in styles to complement just about any design scheme. Some are made from
vinyl,
some from sleek metal, some from
wood
and others use fabric in the construction to lend them a softer look. Blinds are available in a range of colors to match any interior, from rich reds to cool blues.
There are also different types of blinds to choose from. Three of the most common are matchstick blinds, horizontal blinds and vertical blinds.
-
Matchstick blinds
are made from tropical materials, like bamboo, and give a room the feel of an island getaway. The slim sticks of wood are sewn together and roll up much like a shade. Matchstick blinds do not block sunlight well, however.
-
Horizontal blinds
are made from horizontal slats, which can be wide or narrow. The slats can be adjusted to allow more light in or to block it out. Horizontal blinds can be found in different colors and materials and look great with most decorating styles, from traditional to contemporary.
-
Vertical blinds
hang down in front of a window and can also be adjusted to let in more or less light. They are a favorite for use with sliding doors.
When shopping for blinds, a buyer should take into consideration the decor of the room where the blinds will hang, as well as the amount of light and
privacy
desired in the room. For example, while metal blinds are popular choices in office settings and contemporary homes, they generally do not complement traditional interiors.
